Never have so many said so much about something they know so little about.
We're just one day away from the premiere of Dark Shadows and, frankly, I'm a little bit winded by the marathon debate surrounding the movie. Dark Shadows fans have done nothing but argue the relative merits of the film during the last year, save for a handful of blogger on Tumblr who have taken the opportunity to explore the original series in the most minute of details. Some people are a little too angry about the new film, while others have been alarmingly condescending in their defense of a movie they have not seen. I think this was a case of emotion overriding logic, with the more extreme factions of both sides refusing to admit they don't know what they're talking about.
"I hate this movie that I haven't seen!" one side would shout.
"Quit being silly!" the other would respond. "How can you hate such an awesome movie? You haven't even seen it yet!"
The bottom line is that we all want to like this movie. At least we did, back during those months before the first trailer was released.
None of that matters now. Tim Burton made the Dark Shadows movie he wanted to make, and we're going to have to deal with it. I'll be seeing a midnight showing tonight and still hold out hope that Burton can make this work. The concept of a centuries-spanning gothic horror comedy remains an uninteresting idea but, as we've seen in films like Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes, Mars Attacks, Alice in Wonderland and The Corpse Bride, Burton is only as good as his script.
I'll let you know what I think about the film tomorrow. It' a shame this movie was released during the summer, because I kind wanted to wear my Inverness Cape to the screening.

I guess I'm one of the angry ones, huh? (sheepish smile)
ReplyDeleteNot going to say another word until after I see the film, which will be in a few short hours at the Vista Theater. We shall see. Should be quite the interesting night! :-)
Oh, you're one of the angry ones, for sure (I'm more or less in that camp, too.) Don't worry, though ... I don't think you're one of the Dark Shadows Fundamentalists.
DeleteI think my voice in the debate sounds a little like an abused housewife on an episode of "Cops."
I won't be able to go to the local midnight premier and right at this very moment I'm totally hating myself for it. If you would, please mix a box of Raisinets in your popcorn for all of your fellow DS fans who would very much like to be at the midnight premier but can't attend because jobs are stoopid
ReplyDeleteI've got to be up at 6 a.m. and plan on spending the day in an energy drink, protein-bar fueled haze. If you see cat videos and random Danzig lyrics on this website tomorrow, it's because I'm tripping balls.
DeleteAnd popcorn + raisinets = crazy delicious.
DeleteI going at midnight.
ReplyDeleteBatman Returns and Mars Attacks are two of my favorite Burton films. I love everything he did before Planet of the Apes. There's no way this movie will be that bad.
