Kathryn Leigh Scott as Yesta. |
The Catacombs, a website that bills itself as "Comprehensive Guides to SPACE: 1999," has an interesting piece about the costume worn by Kathryn Leigh Scott on the episode "Dorzak."
If you're not familiar with the series, SPACE: 1999 might be the epitome of '70s sci-fi cheese (and I mean that in a good way.) The UK-produced program starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, and followed the adventures of the crew of the Moonbase Alpha. If you're wondering how much adventure one can get into while working on a space research center landlocked to the moon, never fear. In the pilot, a nuclear disaster knocks the moon out of orbit, sending it hurtling through space where the crew encounters an unlikely (and unending) variety of aliens. It had pretty good production design, which was populated by actors wearing costumes that wouldn't look out of place at the Playboy Mansion.
On the Aug. 25, 1977, episode (which is just three months after the debut of STAR WARS, for context) Scott played a character names Yesta on the second-season episode,"Dorzak." As is common on television, her costume was recycled from an earlier episode titled "The Mark of Archanon," which aired less than a year earlier. The Catacombs has a comprehensive overview of the dress, as well notes on how it was altered for Scott. It apparently still has remnants of the make-up she wore on the episode. I love the Internet.
You can read the summary for yourself HERE.
